What are the advantages with HDMI audio?

HDMI has the ability to carry 8 channels of 24-bit audio at 192kHz. That's enough for a 7.1 system playing the highest resolution audio tracks such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Other digital audio cables such as optical and coaxial can deliver multichannel audio, but are limited to lower resolution audio signals. Now, to be honest, there is much debate between optical and HDMI audio. Both deliver multichannel sound and offer great sound. Some audiophiles will swear by optical, some coaxial, some HDMI. No matter what cable you use for audio, you still need to use an HDMI cable for video. So for this discussion, HDMI is what you need for your PS3.
