Is there a difference between normal HDMI cables and PS3 HDMI cables?

The reason people are often confused if a normal HDMI cable will work for their PS3 is because in the past video games consoles like Playstation, PS2, XBox, N64, you name it, have all had their own proprietary A/V connection in the back. FOr instance, your PS2 had a rectangular looking connector (fig. 1). You could hook up your PS2 with normal A/V (RCA) cables (yellow, red, white) or with S-video. Either option you chose, the end of the cable that went into your PS2 still went into the proprietary connection on console. With the advancement of tecnology, introduction to Blu-ray and 1080p high definiton, and industry standards, that has all changed. THe same HDMI cable you would use to hook up a blu-ray player to your HDTV, is the same cable you'd use to hook up your PS3. It's also the same cable you can use to hook up your cable or satellite box if you receive an HD signal. This is really nice because HDMI cables are really cheap. No seriously. You should never pay more than $20 for a 3 or 6 foot HDMI cable. Any device that is going send audio and video via HDMI will all use the same type cable. No proprietary connections and cables means a huge savings to consumers. If you have already looked at PS3 A/V cables at GameStop, Best Buy, or something, you may have noticed that you can't see both ends of the cable when it is in the packaging. This is not a mistake. The packaging is designed to not show you the other end of the cable because they want people to think, "Well, I know one side of the HDMI cable will fit into my TV, but what about the other end? WIthout opening the package I can't tell if the end that goes into my PS3 is a normal HDMI connector or something special. I better play it safe and buy this 'Playstation 3' branded cable for another $20 instead of this regular HDMI cable." Well now you know, if you buy an HDMI cable that is specifically branded for PS3, you're paying more for marketing and packaging. Just buy the cheapest cable you can find in the store or online. Online is usually your best bet to find a cable under $20.
